September 19, Tuesday. Free. International TLAP (Talk Like a Pirate) Day.
Quote: Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple...
Before we go any further, there's something we need to be clear about.
Pirates were and are bad people. Really reprehensible.
Even the most casual exploration of the history of pirates
(and believe us, casual is an accurate description of our research)
leaves you hip deep in blood and barbarity. We recognize this, all right?
We aren't for one minute suggesting that real, honest-to-God pirates were in any way, shape or form worth emulating.
So what is it exactly that we're celebrating here, if not pirates?
What, you're wondering, is the point?
We're going to be painfully honest here, perhaps fatally so.
The point is, there is no point.
And that's what's fun about Talk Like a Pirate Day specifically, and talking like a pirate in general.

September 27, Wednesday, 6:45pm-9pm. $2/person. Peak Oil Discussion.
Quote: We'll follow our usual agenda, in shortened form, to give more time to our presenter, Professor Danny Harvey from the Geography Department of the University of Toronto.
Professor Harvey's work is cited prominently in Richard Gilbert's peak oil report for commissioned by the City of Hamilton.
Professor Harvey describes his topic as "Peak Oil is Not the End of the World (although it might seem like it for some)", and I am really looking forward to hearing him speak.
More information on his research and publications can be found here:
http://www.geog.utoronto.ca/info/faculty/Harvey.htm
One of his courses is "ENERGY SUPPLY AND USE".
"The course exams the options availability for dramatically reducing our use of primary energy with no reduction in meaningful energy services, on the one hand, and in meeting the reduced primary energy demand with renewable energy on the other hand.
The course takes a nut-and-bolts, technical approach: students are expected to learn how various energy using equipment and energy supply equipment works, and from this, understand the possibilities for radical changes in the way we produce and use energy."

Quote: Organic food has jumped from the margins to the mainstream and is now the fastest growing food category on supermarket shelves. What started as a social movement has become an industry with companies like General Mills, ConAgra and Kraft as major players. For some, this represents a victory for organics. September 29, Friday, 6pm. Free. BikeFriday Event - Critical Mass.
Quote: Critical Mass is a bike ride held on the last Friday of every month where bicyclists take to the streets en masse. Critical Mass is not led, and has no officially-stated message, though it is largely understood to be an effort to promote alternative (non-motorized) modes of transportation and to raise awareness about bike-car safety issues. Participants enjoy the security and companionship of travelling as a group through city streets intentionally causing a mild and temporary disruption to vehicle traffic. The general philosophy behind the ride is expressed in the widely-used slogan, "We aren't blocking traffic; we are traffic."
Critical Mass started in 1992 in San Francisco and has spread to over 400 cities around the world. It has been a Toronto tradition since the late 1990s.
Critical Mass starts from the south-west corner of Bloor & Spadina. Cyclists meet at 6:00 and ride at 6:30. There is no set route, for it is decided on the way by whoever happens to be at the front (which changes many many times during a ride).
.
Last friday of the month, every month. Meets at 6pm, leaves at 6:30pm.
Start: SW corner of Bloor St West & Spadina Ave,
(map).

September 29, Friday, 7pm. TVA's Singles Group: Dinner & C.C.F.A. Fundraiser.
Organized by the Toronto Vegetarian Association Singles Group.
Locations: Dinner at Ambsale Ethiopian Restaurant, 416-469-0888, 1134A Danforth Ave, near Greenwood Station
(map) and
C.C.F.A. Fundraiser at Renaissance Cafe, 1938 Danforth Ave, west of Woodbine subway station
(map).
Quote: Come on out this Friday, September 29th at 7:00 p.m. for an absolutely delicious meal at Ambsale Ethiopian Restaurant (1134A Danforth, just east of Greenwood Station) followed by a fundraiser for the Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals (C.C.F.A.) at Renaissance Cafe (1938 Danforth just west of Woodbine Station).
Although Ambsale is not fully veg. they do have a veg. platter served on their traditional injera bread which you use to scoop up your food sans utensils. The cost per individual platter is around $8.
The fundraiser afterwards (which we can all travel to together via subway or splitting cabs) will feature music by Blakely and Walker beginning at 8:30 p.m. and an ongoing photo documentary by the very talented Jo-Anne McArthur entitled "We Animals". There is a $5 entrance fee for this fundraiser which will entitle you to a raffle ticket for some prizes from local vendors and restaurants (hopefully veg ;o).
So that's that! As per usual please r.s.v.p. so I can get a handle on numbers. I've tentatively booked us a table for 30 at the restaurant just based on our past dinner attendance rates but I will need to get a firm number to give to the owner over the next couple of days.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!
Thanks everyone and hope to see you all there!! Paul. :o)

Location: Joe Rockhead's, 29 Fraser Ave, south of King St West, east of Dufferin St
(map).
Quote: VITTs going rock climbing!! Won't be quite like the scenes in Mission Impossible 2, but the improved chances of coming out alive should make the experience all the more fun!
Cost: (all prices +tax)
1. $35: under 6 people, lesson, day pass, shoes, harness.
2. $30: 6 or more people, lesson, day pass, shoes, harness.
3. $25 adults/$23 students: day pass, shoes, harness Indiv prices (if you have your own equipment): $15 adult/$13 student day pass, $6 harness, $6 shoes.
Other Details: Everyone must pass a test showing they know how to belay and tie in.
Therefore, you must take a lesson if it's your first time or if you've forgotten everything you once knew.
Although running shoes are allowed, climbing shoes are highly recommended as they are more flexible and the toe is the right shape to allow better grip on the rocks.
Vegan climbing shoes are available, but only in select sizes, and I have been warned that they may be less comfortable than the standard suede ones.
RSVP: By posting a msg to the board. Be sure to include whether or not you'll need a lesson, and what your previous rock climbing experience is.
This group is for Toronto vegetarians in their twenties that would like to go out and have fun!
As well as going to vegetarian restaurants, we try to have a variety of events to appeal to everyone's tastes. If you would like there to be a specific type of event, feel free to suggest it or plan it yourself. We are a social group run by the Toronto Vegetarian Association.
